Sa’adi poetry transcend the boundaries of nation and the passage of time, to embrace all humanity and all cultures. We in India have always drawn inspiration from Sa’adi’s sublime verse and we find the wise guidance and solace in them for both our everyday dilemmas and our deeper concerns. I have my own treasured volumes of his Golestan and Bostan and to turn them often. His words continue to find resonance in our times because he understood the Universal emotions and feelings that bind all humanity together and his thoughts are suffused with compassion. Indeed, Sa’adi verse inscribed at the entrance to the United Nations in New York ….

“Human beings are members of a whole,

in creation of one essence and sole”

Finds an echo in an ancient Sanskrit saying “Vasudeva Kutumbakam” the whole world is one family.

I can think of no more worthy symbol of the ancient ties between Iranian and Indian culture and civilizations than Sa’adi, who has inspired generations of Indian scholars to study Persian language and literature in all its richness and beauty. This award in Sa’adi, name will, I am sure, encourage younger scholars to continue this tradition and help to strengthen the age old civilization and cultural ties between India and Iran that have enriched both our countries.

With my congratulation to all the entire distinguished person being honored by the Sa’adi Award and my great wishes for the success of the function.
